[comp.windows.x] Frame Buffer Error

shgoh@marvax (Seow-Hiong Goh) (02/13/90)

In the process of installing x11r4 on a cluster of
Sun 3 workstations, runing SunOS3.5, I ran into problems
where after starting up the x server, it dies after approximately
15 seconds, with an error saying that it can't open the frame
buffer. The error messages are:

Getting interface configuration: Operation not supported on socket
   sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device
   sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device
   sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device
   sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device

   Fatal server bug!
   no screens found
   IOT trap

Does anyone know what is wrong?
Thanks in advance!

I have installed the new X11V4 Release on a SUN3/140 running SUNOS 4.0.3.
But I cannot start the server. I am getting the following error messages:

Getting interface configuration: Operation not supported on socket
sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device
sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device
sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device
sunOpenFrameBuffer: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Can somebody help me.

Thanks, Hans

I had the same problem on a Sparcstation 1 running SunOS 4.0.3 until I
installed fix-1 and fix-2, which you should be able to get wherever
you got your X11R4.
