I am using an HP 9000/330 workstation running 7.0 HP-UX with MOTIF window manager. I am trying to change the depth of the pixmap for the root window from 6 to 8. I have tried using xrdb, changing /usr/lib/X11/X0screen to "/dev/crt depth 8" and that does not work. Does anybody have any suggestions. Am I trying to change a parameter that is hardware dependent, or is it software configurable?

Hardware dependent (I assume you have a 98549 or 98547 display card which only have 6 planes of frame buffer memory). Make your sales rep happy and buy a 98550 display card and a new monitor :-) -- Chan Benson HP Fort Collins

What you have to do is create a device file using the mknod(1M) command. If you check in your "Starbase Devices Drivers Library Manual" for the graphics interface you are using, it will explain how to do this. You should then user /dev/crt in you /usr/lib/X11/X0screens to access them. Gary Corte Hewlett-Packard Novi
