[net.news] Commercial news software need not be binary distributed

brad@looking.UUCP (Brad Templeton) (10/24/84)

The nice thing here is that unlike most software, you can't steal commercial
news software. Sure, anybody can copy the code, but the first time they
try and post something they advertise their theft to the world and the
news software author. This is promptly followed up by a call to the management
of the offending company demanding payment. 99% of all companies will pay
quickly if the amount is under $500 and the thief will be in position for
a strong reprimand and possible loss of employment if they aren't valuable
to the company.

Now with private computers and some schools, this is harder, but there
are ways to track this down, too.

This may seem heavy handed, but so is theft and violation of contract!
