[comp.windows.x] OpenWindows Compatibility

quenelle@ssiwest.UUCP (Chris Quenelle) (03/06/90)

I made the following statements recently, and now I realize them
to have been rash and somewhat behind the times. The difficulties
I complained about were caused by an older version of OpenWindows,
and by my not yet having obtained the contrib tapes.

me> From xpert-request@expo.lcs.mit.edu Fri Mar 2 14:09:55 1990
me>
me> Has anyone had any success with getting OpenWindows tools
me> to work with the MIT sample server on a Sun ? (either with twm or olwm ?)

I now understand many people have. ;-)

me> One of the reasons I don't like OpenFonts is that (in its current state)
me> you can't have a private font path. This makes it inconvenient to
me> try out new fonts.

My parenthetical statement should have read "(in a previous state)". ;-)
The problem I complain about has been fixed in Release 1.0.1.

me> I like Sun's DeskSet (the directory browser, and the mailtool most),
me> but I don't like the fact that I have to run xnews and use OpenFonts
me> to use the DeskSet tools.

All I need to do is get the contrib tapes and install the OpenLook
fonts thereon.

Thanks to Susan Bickford at SunEast for pointing out that everything
worked for her, perhaps she was fortunate enough to be introduced
to OpenWindows with a working version.

Just for the record: I don't mind bugs in the initial release of software
as long as complaints are responded to, and bugs are fixed promptly.
I think that in general, Sun has lived up to this.
