[comp.windows.x] Questions regarding graphics packages for Network Design

rajarar@hubcap.clemson.edu (Bala Rajaraman) (03/07/90)

I am requesting information to help make a choice among three graphics packages
(i.e., X-Windows, HOOPS, & AUTOCAD). The selected package will be used to
develop a network design workstation using a SUN SPARCstation1 (w/ 8M main
memory & no graphics accelerator) &/or an Apple Mac IIx (w/ 5M main memory &
40M Hard Disk). For any or all of the three graphics packages, I am particularly
interested in answers to the following questions:
1) Languages supported?
2) Portability?
3) Software cost?
4) Software storage requirements?
5) Known bugs?
6) Quality of technical support?
7) Quality of documentation (on-line & printed)?
8) Vectorized of bit-mapped graphics?
9) Animation capability?
10) Relative speed between the packages?
11) Relative ease of customization or development?
12) Fixed area per drawing page or "boundless page"?
13) Capability to "nest" objects/pages?
14) Capability to interface with database packages?
15) Limitations? Such as:
    (a) Size of object library?
    (b) Levels of Zoom?
    (c) Frames per drawing page?
    (d) Objects per page?
    (e) Objects per drawing?

I would also appreciate information regarding experience specifically related
to use of any graphics packages for network design[must be capable of
interfacing with a database package]. Please reply by email to
