I received several responses to my query about window-based mail readers which run under X11R4. Following is a summary. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From: Nathaniel Borenstein <nsb@thumper.bellcore.com> Well, if you compile contrib/toolkits/andrew, you'll get the Andrew mail system, which is not only window-based but allows you to send either standard (ASCII) or multimedia mail, including pictures, animations, and lots of other neat stuff. Check it out. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From: Isaac Salzman <salzman@rand.org> Get OpenWindows from Sun. It's the X11/NeWS server plus a lot of other stuff. Part of it is the "deskset" - a bunch of window tools including replacements for most of the standard SunView programs reimplemented in XView. XView is an X11 implementation of SunView with an OPEN LOOK "look and feel". It's not an exact replacement, but it's got the same basic interface, and SunView programs are easily converted. Anyway, there's an XView version of mailtool in there that runs just fine under X11R4 (as all the other XView deskset applications). There's also a file manager that's pretty nice (a directory browser ala macintosh), and other goodies. Worth getting! I happen to be working on an XView interface for MH (I don't like xmh, it's a clumsy user interface - for the most part).... MH is a really nice mail system, you ought to consider it (ftpable from uunet.uu.net among other places). My interface won't be ready for some time though.... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From: mwolf@pws.bull.com A company called Alphalpha is developing an X-based product called Omegamail. What I have seen of it makes me believe that it'll be very good, but I don't think it's quite done yet. If you can wait a few months to get it, contact Alphalpha Software, Inc., 267 Allston St. #3, Cambridge, MA 02139. They are on the internet, but I don't know which person there you should mail to, so phone might be better. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From: Edward Vielmetti <emv@math.lsa.umich.edu> ftp mh from ics.uci.edu. very nice. or read comp.mail.mh too. --Ed I'm running it on a 4/260 and a 4/60 under 4.0.3, no problemo. There's alpha patches to make it use shared libs as well if you're somewhat brave. configuring the thing the first time can be somewhat daunting but the setup does know about Suns and SunOS 4.0.3 so that makes it a bit easier. --Ed - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Robert E.
