[comp.windows.x] Motif window manager & multiple screens

kaleb@mars.jpl.nasa.gov (Kaleb Keithley) (03/09/90)

I don't know where else to ask this, so I'll ask it here.

Does anyone at OSF know if version 1.1 mwm will support multiple screens?
And, if not in 1.1, then when?

Would someone at expo explain why the X standard specifically does include
multiple screens, yet ICCCM seems to be "lacking" in this regard? I ask
this, because ICCCM compliance seems to be foremost in everyone's mind
when it comes to "how" window managers work; yet it wasn't until recently
that the more popular window managers supported multiple screens. Is
(excuse my ignorance) the ICCCM even the right place for this kind of
requirement specification?

Yes, I can run an mwm for each screen, but there are some (esoteric) little
things about the way it works (or doesn't work, as the case may be) that
are less than desirable. No, buying the source doesn't work, because, as
anyone who has tried to buy the source knows, OSF has very restrictive
Terms and Conditions, and they conflict with JPL's Terms and Conditions,
and never the two shall meet, it seems.

Also, I've heard the argument that systems with multiple screens are relatively
new to the scene, and that developing for obscure, expensive, and/or little
used hardware configurations is difficult (if not imposssible) for the various
software developers out there. But, that was just as much an issue when
X first came out as it is now, and that didn't stop the folks at expo from
"supporting" multiple screens then.
