I've been attempting to keep up with the correspondence and the replies I've seen on the net to the whole William's affair, and it's become quite clear to me that I handled parts of the situation very poorly. I still feel that bringing him to the attention of the usenet contacts at Dec was the proper thing to do and in the same situation in the future I would to the same thing. Unfortunately, the posting that I made discussing the situation was very poorly thought out and made a number of things look much worse than they were. As someone who tends to preach tolerance on the net, I'm in the unenviable position of having to recognize that my own tolerance fell far short of what it should have. I feel that I've done John Williams, the net, the readers on the net, and myself a disservice. I made John look like a much worse person than he is and created a lot of pain and trouble for people that simply didn't deserve it. If I'd been a little more careful in how I said what I said most of this could have been avoided, and it should have been avoided. In retrospect I've caused a lot more pain and problem by trying to bring the resolution of the problem onto the net than the problem itself caused. John needed a guidance, not a kick in the tail, and I've unfortunately given him that because I overreacted in an inappropriate way. If I've caused him unneccessary problems either in his work environment or on the net because of all this discussion, I'm quite sorry for that. My thanks to the many people out on the net who took this opportunity to beat on my head and point out that I'd blown it. I had, and if a similar situation occurs in the future I plan on being much more careful on how it is dealt with. sigh. chuq -- From the Department of Bistromatics: Chuq Von Rospach {cbosgd,decwrl,fortune,hplabs,ihnp4,seismo}!nsc!chuqui nsc!chuqui@decwrl.ARPA I'd know those eyes from a million years away....
