Okay, enough. I've received mail from a number of people whose opinions I respect and they have suggested (to varying degrees) that I shouldn't have made my original posting. Maybe so. I'll cancel it. Normally, I can tolerate assholes fairly well, but this time it got through to me. My apologies for hauling it into the net for the rest of you to see. To those of you who sent mail to "bozo" agreeing with him, I really resent being labeled as a "facist". I also resent the very hostile attitude of the person who sent me the original mail, and I really wonder just what some of you were agreeing with. If you were agreeing that news 2.10.2 was buggy, you obviously haven't tried it -- it isn't. If you were agreeing with his personal attack, I'd like to know why. I will stop posting biweekly "checkgroups" messages. Too many sites don't support it and I refuse to deal with both the mail load AND the abuse when I try to do something about it. It also has caused problems for at least one of our neighboring sites due to the mail traffic, and I don't wish to inconvenience them further. If anyone else out there is foolish enough to want to try braving the storm, let me know and I'll provide you with all the necessary tools to bury yourself. The caretaker's job of maintaining the list of active newsgroups is also available to anyone who believes he'll do a less "facist" job of maintaining it. And as for all the so-called "bugs" in 2.10.2, I have seen very little sign of them. 2.10.2 came up in a matter of 3/4 hour here, and we haven't had any problems with it. Neither have any of our neighbors. We're running it under 4.1, 4.2 and System V, on Vaxen and on a Pyramid. We've seen some features which need re-evaluation and tuning, but no major bugs. It seems that people who put in the "rn" hacks or who didn't install the patch kit Rick sent out are the only ones with any problems, and I believe those to be relatively minor. As it stands, 2.10.2 is much more bug-free than the version of 2.10.1 we were using. In any event, if Rick is still on schedule, 2.10.3 will be out in a matter of a few weeks and even those small bugs will be fixed. I don't believe rudeness is appropriate or acceptable, on the net or elsewhere. For my part, at least, I apologize to you readers if my original posting was rude. Hey, come on, it's a flame, but the net seems to generate those almost spontaneously. We here were also the recipients of your automated message, and, we're doing the best we can, but try telling your boss that you can't work on what's highest priority at your site 'cause you just spent the entire week getting news flowing again, and you have to upgrade to what is, apparently, buggy software. Poof, no more USENET, because it's real hard to justify. People are working on getting the bugs out, it's true, but it's clear that that's not done yet. In the meantime, we're doing some of the things we're paid to do, and want to do. You probably caught the guy at a bad time. Have a little more patience. -- ...!hplabs!faunt faunt%hplabs@csnet-relay HP is in no way responsible for anything I say here. In fact, it may have been generated by a noisy 'phone line. I can sympathize with the poster, because here we don't have time to upgrade to 2.10.2 at this time. I don't remember Gene's letter, however judging from his postings I don't think he meant for it to be threatening. I do, however, have to recognize that some sites have more important things to do than convert to 2.10.2 (not because they think 2.10.2 is unimportant, but just that so many things take higher priority). I hope that the rest of the net can wait patient- ly for everyone else to convert. This is better than a flaming reply, isn't it? -- Baby tie your hair back in a long white bow ...
