[comp.windows.x] X on a Mac

mujica@ra.cs.ucla.edu (S. Mujica) (08/10/89)

I need to run The X WIndow System in a MacIntosh. Is it possible?

I would appreciate any information. I am particularly interested in:
what software is necessary and who sells it; what hardware is
necessary and who sells it.

Thanks,

At SIGGRAPH last week, Apple was showing 2 X products for the
Macintosh: X11R3 for A/UX and MacX for MultiFinder. Their literature
states that MacX supports AppleTalk, TCP/IP, and DECnet.

White Pine Software sells an X server called eXodus. You can contact
them at (603) 886-9050. Their server is out now (I have a copy on my
desk) and it runs under the Finder. It's a little slow, but not too
bad. As of this release, there's no color support.

eXodus runs all on Macs from the Plus to the IIcx. You'll need to
make sure you have the correct network software running on it, though;
we're using TCPort software from Kinetics. Here's what White Pine's
manual says about networking support:

eXodus currently provides interfaces to the following drivers...
	CommUnity-Mac DECNET from Technology Concepts
	TSSnet DECNEt from Alisa Systems
	TCPoft/HostAccess	TCP/IP from Kinetics

Future releases of eXodus will support the followin drivers...
	ADSP AppleTalk Data Stream Protocol
	MacTCP TCP/IP from Apple

I hope that helps some.

	George
