[comp.windows.x] installing X11/R4

steven@uhccux.uhcc.hawaii.edu (Steven Sakata) (03/20/90)

Hi, I'm trying to set up X11/R4 on our Sparcstations. This is how we have our
systems configured:

     - Each Sparcstation has its own system files and programs (ie. / and /usr
       file systems)
     - One Sparcstation has file systems that hold the home directories and
other programs that can be shared by all Sparcstations (through nfs
       mounts).

When I install X11, it puts the executables and libraries in /usr/bin/X11 and
/usr/lib respectively. In other words, it puts these files in the file systems
that aren't available via nfs mounts. Thus making it usable for only one
system. Also, It is filling up the / and /usr file systems.

What I want to do is to have the files installed in one of the file systems that
can be nfs mounted by all the systems and just have links created on each
system. For example, instead of having the executables installed in
/usr/bin/X11, I would like them to be installed in /usr/local/X/bin (which
/usr/local is a file system nfs mountable by all systems) and have /usr/bin/X11
created on each system as a link to /usr/local/X/bin.

Is there an easy way to modify the "Makefile" to change the destination
directories and create links (ie install in /usr/local/X/bin and create the
link /usr/bin/X11 to it)?

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments......Thanks, Steven.
