... Some people have asked in this newsgroup how one can be sure that a voting on the creation of a newsgroup is not rigged. I once conducted such a vote on eunet.jokes (european counterpart to net.jokes). In fact, when I posted the results of the vote, I gave the e-mail address of each voter and the corresponding vote Y/N. So each voter could complain if I misrepresented his/her vote, made a counting mistake ,or forgot to include him/her. (I received no complaint of this nature.) Of course, someone can always encourage his ``friends'' to massively vote yes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- maldoror@prlb2.UUCP {enea,hirst1,inria,mcvax,munnari,philabs,seismo,unido}!prlb2!maldoror

I don't think there's anything wrong with a "secret vote" to the extent that people shouldn't have to fear their names and votes being released later! People should be able to vote privately. This can certainly be accomplished if an impartial third party, ideally one in a position to note "odd" voting patterns or bogus names, handled the collection of votes. They would of course keep all legit votes confidential. --Lauren--

Get serious, people. You're losing perspective. If someone cares enough to go to the trouble to create bogus votes, who are we to stand in the way? Next thing you know you'll be asking us all to register with Usenet central -- nobody can vote unless listed in the Usenet directory... -- scott preece gould/csd - urbana ihnp4!uiucdcs!ccvaxa!preece
