[comp.windows.x] Legal status of X fonts

devin@LUCID.COM (Matthieu Devin) (05/03/90)

Dear experts,

Can fonts delivered in the X11 distribution be used in a non X
application without paying a licence fee?

We would like to convert them to our private format for use in a
commercial product.

Thanks for information

Some of the fonts are "public domain", you can do anything you want
with them. Most of the fonts carry explicit copyright and permission
notices; read the notices to see what you can do. For example, many
carry something of this form:

Permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute this software and
its documentation for any purpose and without fee is hereby granted,
			  ^^^
Note this word:------------|
provided that <read the rest of this fine print!>

The word "any" really means any.

Many fonts also carry statements about use of trademark; you need to pay
attention to those statements as well.
