[comp.windows.x] The GWM mailing lists: a survey

colas@AVAHI.INRIA.FR (Colas Nahaboo) (05/29/90)

the size of the "gwm-talk" mailing list (GWM X11 Window Manager) has increased
to a point where errors in some mail adresses seems to prevent other sites from
receiving the mail, and each message triggers a lot of mail errors.
Moreover it is not very sensible, since gwm-talk is based
in France, and that most of the subscribers are based in the US, to generate
such a cross-atlantic traffic.

Thus I am asking for informal advice on how I should handle the situation.
Now, there are two mailing lists: gwm-talk for discussion, and gwm-bugs for
bug reports and patches. Here is some actions I am considering, feel free to
send me your feelings about them. I will summarize your advices on gwm-talk
and comp.windows.x.

1) create a comp.windows.x.gwm newsgroup, with a shadow mailing list for
people not having access to the news (like comp.windows.x &
xpert@expo.lcs.mit.edu).

2) use comp.windows.x instead of a new newsgroup (gwm mailing list traffic
averages 40 messages per month since it was created)

3) keep only one mailing list. (merging gwm-talk & gwm-bugs into gwm-users?
gwm? gwm-talk?). Most people now subscribe to both, and perhaps there is not a
clear separation between what should go in each to justify two lists.

4) On the contrary, put a better-organised formal bug handling, "a la" X
Consortium: Submit bugs to an address, and have two mailing lists: one for
me to re-issue immediately raw bug reports with just a reference number added,
and one for me to send fixes notification or patches.

5) keep the mailing lists, (wrt newsgroups), but use an US-based volunteer
relay site to decrease the cross-atlantic load

Thanks,
colas.
