[comp.windows.x] SUMMARY: VT220 X-Windows Emulators

snoopy@ixos.uucp (05/30/90)

Dear Net,

here is the promised summary of terminal emulations for
DEC VT220 terminals available under X-Windows.

Firstly let me please correct one of my mistakes. When I said xvt100
in my query I of course meant 'xterm'. We just call it xvt100 on some of
our machines.

The response was quite good; although some people just wanted to add their
name to the list in the "I need that too" form (thats OK with me).

Thanks to all who contributed:

Here is the summary:
1. If your have a DEC machine, DEC will supply dxterm which does VT320/340
emulation:

"If you own any DEC machines you can use DECterm which is a vt340
emulator."

"DEC has their dxterm, which is a VT240 emulator or something like that.
It is a DECwindows product and is only available for VMS and Ultrix
(we use, among others, Encore's Multimax systems, DG's AViiON's and a
few Sun's)."

2. Century Software make a commercial one. Also NCD will come up with
something in their newest X-Terminals.

"Century Software
5284 South 320 West
Suite C134
Salt Lake City, Utah 84197
USA
Phone: (801) 268-3088

A West German Contact is: Tauris Data (06121) 50 93 92."

"There are a couple of companies who sell X clients that imitate VT220.
The only one I can think of now is Century Software in Utah somewhere.
You can try sending email to mikeh@ncd.com to see if he knows of others.
MikeH is in charge of market development and keeps track of 3rd party
software.

The next release of NCDware (2.2) will have a VT220 emulator built
in as a "local client" running on the NCD station. This is not the
best answer, but the guys building terminal emulators seem to be slow
getting off the mark."

3. There is a program that can be ftp'd:

"(Time for another plug for mterm :-)

I have a program which is a fairly close VT emulation, if you don't
want 132-column mode or REGIS graphics. It was written from a copy of
ANSI X3.64 and a DEC VT330 manual. It does not support *all* the
special character sets; anything not found in an ISO8859-1 font is not
available. It also does not do smooth-scroll or software-changable
tabs stops. It does do double height and/or width and several video
attributes (bold, light, underline, blinking, reverse, and invisible).

If nothing else it may be a good starting point. (And the price is
right :-)

If you can ftp, connect to 132.206.1.1, cd to X/mterm.src, and poke
around. If not, drop me a line and I can mail it to you. As always, I
welcome any comments anyone may have on it."

I hope the above summary helps those who are looking. Once again thanks
to all of you who helped.

Love,
Snoopy
