When we made X on our Sun-3/160, we edited config/sun.cf to contain the line #define DefaultCCOptions -f68881 -pipe to speed compilations and to use the math coprocessor. Everything has worked fine, until we just tried to make Gnu Emacs with X support; it complains that f68881_used is undefined in its libXMenu11.a and in the X libraries /lib/liboldX.a and /lib/libX11.a. It's tough but not impossible to solve this problem when making Emacs, but it prompts me to ask whether we have actually gained anything from including the flag in our configuration file. Does it, in fact, gain us any advantage in run-time performance to specify -f68881 when compiling X11? This is news. This is your | Peter Scott, NASA/JPL/Caltech brain on news.
