[comp.windows.x] X11R4 contrib stuff

vesper@gsfc.nasa.gov (Greg Vesper - RMS) (06/08/90)

I've had X11R4 running on a sun3 for several months with no problems.
I finally got around to compiling some contrib stuff and am having
all sorts of problems..

I'm choking on the client header files, for example, xcalendar has an
xcalendar.h file which both my cc and gcc compiler are choking on.

In addition, even programs that compile properly, like xlock, bomb when
they execute. (XtGrabPointer fails for xlock).

I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't something terribly wrong with my
header files. A lot of the contrib clients rely on the Xaw headers, all
of which are properly installed on my machine.

Anybody have any clues??

thanx

I tried to mail this to you, your mailer choked.....

Nope, nothing's wrong. Most of the contrib clients were sent to MIT as
R3 clients. Things changed in R4. In particular some MIT header files
were placed in subdirectories below /usr/include/X11.

Your best bet is to ftp new R4 versions of the contrib clients from
expo.lcs.mit.edu. Most of the contrib clients with problems have been
updated and the new sources are on that machine.

In particular, xlock was taking advantage of a bug in the R3 intrinsics,
that's why it worked for R3 and is broken for R4. The new source is on
expo.
