It has been a while now since the majority of the mod groups have been created. It is beginning to look as though either many of them are a failure or there is a problem. I suspect the latter. My site has been receiving mod articles in some of the newsgroups but not in others. This looks to me not to be caused entirely on missing "mod" in sys files. In particular, some articles have been arriving that traversed the path: ... -> cbosgd -> ihnp4 -> mgnetp -> hw3b -> wnuxb. However, we have received none of the mod.maps.news postings except the Intro messages where were also posted to net.news.map. Here is the portion of my active file showing the mod groups. mod.movies 00016 00013 y mod.music 00000 00001 y mod.singles 00019 00019 y mod.sources 00015 00010 y mod.unix 00000 00001 y mod.std 00000 00001 y mod.motss 00027 00027 y mod.newslists 00024 00011 y mod.map.news 00002 00002 y mod.map.uucp 00000 00001 y mod.map 00000 00001 y mod.std.c 00000 00001 y mod.std.mumps 00000 00001 y mod.test 00002 00002 y As you can see, we have been receiving articles for only a handful of the groups, in particular mod.movies, mod.singles, mod.sources, mod.motss, and mod.newslists. Are the others actually silent (I can't believe that mod.map.news is.) or is there some weird problem. The two sites between me and ihnp4 is my only feed, so if someone had a bad sys file (I looked and they seemed ok.) I shouldn't be getting any, right? Any news wizards out there have any ideas? I've found a number of problems (see the articles I posted last night in net.news.adm) in sys files all over the net-- this is keeping some of the standard distributions (especially mod and na) from getting to sections of the net. Because of this I've significantly slowed the traffic in mod.singles-- I don't want to use it heavily until I'm pretty sure most people will see it. Also, there have been some hidden problems with generating good return addresses and how that impacts distribution on the net (*sigh*) that can keep specific messages out of certain areas of the net. I'm (slowly) working on some administrative software that should deal better with that problem than my current hack. I don't think they are failures-- they are still being shaken down, and since this is a volunteer effort they are being fixed only when there is time to really work on it-- and that time has been rather rare recently. chuq -- From behind the bar: Chuq Von Rospach {allegra,cbosgd,decwrl,hplabs,ihnp4,seismo}!nsc!chuqui nsc!chuqui@decwrl.ARPA Deadbone erotica is the prickly panic of forgotten milleniums, it is the moldy billion year madness that creeps deep along the spinal behind of my mind.

For what it's worth, we were not getting about half the mod.all groups on cbhydra. It turned out that the suid bit on inews had become unset, and the new articles were being installed in junk. If you find you aren't getting any mod.all groups, check the sys file of the machines upstream from you - perhaps they aren't transmitting them. If you also aren't getting net.announce, you may be running news version 2.10, with the mod bug. Or someone upstream from you may be running a very old news, or notesfiles, or sending you news in A format, all of which will strip out the approval stamp neede for moderated newsgroups to be accepted. If you are getting some mod.all groups but missing others, check the suid bit on inews, your junk directory, and your log file. One recently posted article to grep for is <571@genrad.UUCP>, in newsgroup mod.sources. If you are getting most moderated groups, but nothing on mod.music or mod.unix, this is to be expected. Nothing is being posted to those two newsgroups right now, as far as I know. Mark Horton
