Version 1.3 of the Img Software Set is now available for anonymous ftp from: venera.isi.edu pub/img_1.3.tar.Z expo.lcs.mit.edu contrib/img_1.3.tar.Z Changes include several small bug fixes, with thanks due to Paul Close of Silicon Graphics for several. The biggest change is addition of dithering to color quantization. Since the quantization algorithm relased with version 1.2 was intended for use with dithering, it's about time this appeared. I'm delighted to say that it's performed admirably in its 10 minutes of test time; the new quantization algorithm with dithering produces radically better image quality than the old algorithm in version 1.1 on the image I checked. In the image collection on venera I've updated images/color_mapped/model.p.Z with a copy produced by the latest code. If time allowed, I'd requantize as many images as possible -- but it doesn't, so I won't. Regretably I won't be able to respond to any questions or comments mailed to me at the address below; I'm leaving ISI for good in less than 2 hours, and hopefully will surface again at Unify Corporation on Monday. However, they're only a UUCP site -- I won't have ftp access, and therefore won't be able to provide further public updates to the Img Software Set or to the image collection on venera. ---------------- Paul Raveling Raveling@isi.edu
