[net.news] test message posted to mod.test

mark@cbosgd.UUCP (Mark Horton) (12/29/84)

I just posted a test message to newsgroup mod.test, message-id
<614@cbosgd.UUCP>. If you don't get that message, chances are
you won't get the Usenet map posted shortly after the first of
the month.

We've gotten several complaints of not getting the maps, now
that they are posted to mod.map.news. The typical complaint
says that the introductory blurb (which was posted to both
mod.map.news and net.news.map) is received, but no other files.

It is important to get these problems cleared up quickly, since
the second posting of the UUCP map to mod.map.uucp will occur
about a week into January. If you get this message but do not
get the test message, please have your site contact do the following:

(a) wait a day in case the test message gets delayed. (I'm posting this
    on the 28th of December.)
(b) send me mail, telling me
  (1) your machine name
  (2) the path you typically receive news via (up to some backbone
host or other point of common divergence.) If you have two
or more feeds, include that information.
  (3) Do you receive any moderated newsgroups? You should be receiving
      net.announce, mod.newslists, net.map.uucp, mod.singles, mod.motss,
and mod.sources, and perhaps a few more. Right now, we show a lot
of files in mod.newslists and a single file in several other groups.
  (4) Have you checked with the news contact upstream to see if they
are sending you mod.all in their sys file?
  (5) Have you checked your log file (/usr/lib/news/log) to see if
any of these articles are arriving and being junked?
  (6) Do these newsgroups appear in your active file (/usr/lib/news/active)?
  (7) Do these newsgroups have dirs (e.g. /usr/spool/news/mod/newslists)?
  (8) Are the directories writable by the inews program?
  (9) Do any of these articles appear in /usr/spool/news/junk?
  (10) Any other ideas you have as to what might be going wrong.

Send a carbon copy of your mail to the Usenet contact(s) upstream.
