[comp.windows.x] Question about shared object libs

For reasons which I won't go into, I wish to install X11R4 
shared object libraries in a directory other than /usr/lib/.  
Is there anyway that I can do this, and still have the applications
work?

Like, is there an environment variable that can point the way
to an alternate lib path?

(I'm using a Sun4 architecture machine.)
