[comp.windows.x] A Basic Question about running a slow machine like an X terminal

rajeshg@diamond.tamu.edu (Rajesh Godbole) (07/08/90)

and it is, is it possible to run both the X server and the clients
remotely from another machine? if it is'nt then how would i set it
up so that a 3/50 would run the server on it and all the other clients
including the window manager remotely from a 3/260 when X is started.

the 3/50 takes forever to start X, so it would be nice to have it
running like an X terminal. i've tried putting in rsh commands in the
.xinitrc file and also using the startx script with the rsh command,
but it hasn't worked, X hangs on me.

Thanks in advance,

Get R4 and use the XDMCP support in the server and xdm. It's quite easy to
turn your 3/50 into an X terminal. Someone in the past posted information
about a stripped down kernel for the 3/50 as well, but I don't have a pointer,
sorry.
