[comp.windows.x] Color pixmap storage standard?

welch@earthquake.Berkeley.EDU (Sean N. Welch) (07/10/90)

I am interested in adding color to an existing bitmap editing program
and would like to know what standards, if any, are spelled out by X
for the storage of data that makes up a multi plane pixmap. In
particular I know that AT&T has a pixmap editor that they were showing
off at Xhibition and wanted to know if it has been released, and if so,
what format they use.

In addition, being new to this, I was interested if there is a way to
create a multi plane pixmap from information in file(s) other than
reading in individual bitmaps and constructing in that way? Outside
of using the XImage package and going about what I expect could be some
very messy programming to get the data, is there some XReadPixmapFile?
Perhaps I'm showing my ignorance by even asking such a question, but is
there a good reason that no Pixmap File Format is defined in the
documentation I've been using? I've been using "Introduction to the X
Window System" by Oliver Jones and have been very pleased with it and
imagine that this is more a case of me looking for something that isn't
supposed to be there.

Thanks in advance,
Sean Welch
