[comp.windows.x] Serial line x-terminal emulation

m1rlr01@fed.frb.gov (Rich Rauscher) (07/18/90)

Has anyone had any experience with any x-terminal
emulators that work over a serial line. I realize
that this would be tremendously slow.
Does such software exist (for Mac or PC)?
Please mail me responses because I don't read this
group too often.
Thank
-Rich

We're working with such software here at TRW. We've cobbled up a system
that runs with souped up Zenith 248's running PC XSight X server from
Locus, and using SLIP software from FTP (the company). The link between
the PC's and the main computer (a Solbourne 5/600), is done between
MNP Class 9 modems. We have been able to drive them up to 19.2Kbaud.
Although we have tried valiantly to bring the speed up to 38.4k, it
hasn't worked, because the Zeniths don't seem to be able to keep up
with that speed (and be able to switch in and out of protected mode)
fast enough to keep from locking up the XSight server.

It works (!), albeit slowly.

But hey, have you ever run X windows clients in St. Louis MO, with the
X Server being in Korea, Hawaii or Panama?

P.S.
Beware of PC XSight. It locks up constantly (even over ethernet), and
has tremendously poor documentation. Locus customer support also leaves
something to be desired. When we were at our most desperate state (about
a month ago when we could not drive things at 38.4k), they refused to send
someone out to help us (and their technical support folk are just up the
freeway). We are currently looking for alternatives.
