Since the discussion on this started, I have indeed written a program. Essentially this puts up a Command widget, with the motd as the string. To get rid of the message, you merely click on the window and it quits! Very simple. Of course, if the motd is very big, this might not work so well - ours rarely exceeds 10 lines - but throwing many lines at a terminal is not so good either - it is better to use mail or news for that size messages (surely?). The program I have written uses an interim version of the Xcu Wlm widget - interim because I am currently updating it. The advantage of this is that users can tailor the interface slightly, eg to have a separate quit button. Anyone is welcome to a copy, although I'm changing the setup interface at this very moment, and it will get out of date very quickly! John Forrest, Dept of Computation, UMIST.
