[comp.windows.x] fonts getting in the way

khaled@sunb2.cs.uiuc.edu (07/25/90)

When using x functions from another machine, some work, but
some don't, and it seems that the remote machine is looking
for a certain font on my host machine, and does not find any.
I don't know how it doesn't find ANY, since some DO work.

More specifically, suppose I want to use "xfig" from another
machine, the following is a trace of what happens on the other
machine :

sunb2-10>xfig
Initializing FIG v2.0 Protocol v1.4X (X11 patchlevel 5) ...
Error: Unable to load any useable ISO8859-1 font
sunb2-11>

I should note that on another host machines these programs do work,
so it is not a matter of these programs being bad.

So is it the case that the program is looking for a specific font,
or font family or something, and not finding it??
If that is the case, how can I check the fonts that ARE available,
the fonts that the program is looking for, and how can I add
to my existing set of fonts the fonts the program is looking for??

I appreciate the help,

Thanks,

-Khaled

Add the following to your .Xdefaults file:
XtDefaultFont: <some good font name for your system>

The error message indicates that you are using an older version of X
and/or do not have a fonts.alias file for translating the ISO names.
Try xlsfonts and see if anything with ISO8859-1 in the last part of
the name is output.
