[net.news.group] New group net.vms - progress and a question

dww@stl.UUCP (David Wright) (09/06/85)

20 replies so far (pretty good for 2 days!) - 19 YES + 1 abstain.
Much too soon to consider any result final, but when there's been enough
time I'll post a summary in accord with recent suggestions on how to ensure
a fair count.

Reason for this posting is that 2 voters have suggested 2-way gatewaying
of net.vms with the ARPA INFO-VAX (fa.info-vax) or (the proposed?) INFO-VMS
and I don't know how to do such a thing - it's presumably possible. Because
stl is not on the ARPANET I cannot even reply to one of them (I've tried, but
I can't find a route that will accept it). Note that we (and most other
USENET sites I know) cannot post to fa. groups, which is one reason why I
don't think fa.info-vax as it is at present is adequate for vms news.
A lot of non-ARPA people have useful info/experience/solutions/SW for VMS too.

So has anyone anything useful to suggest about two-way gatewaying? Especially,
can anyone out there perform such a function?

Copy of the 2 messages on ARPA gatewaying follow:

yes, I'd like a net.vms. There's been talk of changing INFO-VAX (the
arpa counterpart of fa.info-vax) into 2 lists: INFO-VAX to discuss
vax-related issues independent of OS, and INFO-VMS. It would
be nice to have net.vms gateway into INFO-VMS; it would also let
me return to reading INFO-VAX faithfully again.

I vote "yes", but ONLY on the following condition -- that at the
same time "fa.info-vax" is eliminated AND a full two-way USENET-to-ARPA
gateway between the ARPA Info-Vax mailing list and net.vms is set up.

That is, there is to be no transition time or intervening time when
there is some independent net.vms traffic that does not appear on
the ARPA side in Info-Vax.

If this cannot be done, I would vote "no", and recommend you simply
use the existing Info-Vax list by mailing submissions to it, the same
as you would participate in any other "fa" group on USENET.

Once again, I emphasize that people will almost never vote AGAINST
a newsgroup unless they have some particular gripes. You always
tend to get almost all YES votes since only people who are
interested usually reply. The results are automatically skewed
to make it look like "most respondents" are in favor.

Note that the ARPA VMS list has been getting extremely voluminous
lately. If you gateway that in, you're instantly opening up
a pile of new traffic and sending it all over this net.
