[] My .newsrc lists 195 news groups, not all of which are actually available on my machine. However, I am surprised that net.pers (net.personal) is not one of them. Perhaps we could remove a lot of broadcast garbage from the other groups by creating this one. It would be an international "personals" column. The "Joe Smith from Indiana '78 where are you?" articles could go there. It would probably be read widely for the same reasons that personals columns are. One rule would be - no business allowed in this newsgroup. We might find that the other groups cleared up if there was someplace to go. I really think this suggestion is even better than my recent proposal of net.abolish. -- "It's the thought, if any, that counts!" Dick Grantges hound!rfg

About 6 months ago, someone made the suggestion to create a
"net.personals". The idea was discussed at some length in
net.news.group (which, BTW, is the proper group for discussing proposed
and current newsgroups). The idea was almost universally rejected for
the same reason we don't have a "net.forsale" -- it would indirectly
encourage people to post items net-wide which have only a regional
interest. The netters in Sweden and England most likely aren't
interested in replying to carpool ads, and the folks in Korea and
Australia aren't going to be very interested in "67 Chevy for sale in
NJ" postings.
If anyone thinks that net traffic should include personal ads of any
sort, then create a LOCAL newsgroup to handle it. A state or regional
distribution is fine, but NOT "net".
