[comp.windows.x] What is a UIL pre-compiler?

larry1@slovax.WA.COM (larry1) (07/26/90)

I am new to the world of X and I -think- I have a question
regarding portability of programs written under X. Can
anyone explain to me what a UIL pre-compiler is/does? A
project has come up recently to port code from SCO Xenix
to HP-UX. In my spin up programs under HP-UX I have never
heard mention of or needed to use such a pre-compiler. Any
information would be appreciated.

I don't know for sure, but two things come to mind. One is that at 1.1
there should be available a meta-language for describing new widgets for
UIL. The more likely explanation though is that someone has written
a preprocessor for UIL to hide the syntax from the user. I know that
was *my* first thought when I saw UIL.

I'm not sure which upsets me more; that people are so unwilling to accept
responsibility for their own actions, or that they are so eager to regulate
everyone else's.

I think that your first guess is the correct one. There is no something called
the "Widget Meta Language" (aka WML) which is used by the UIL pre-compiler to
actually build the UIL compiler.
