[comp.windows.x] Inputting French Accented Characters?

Could anyone send me xmodmap commands for conveniently inputting french
accented characters from a standard qwerty keyboard?  I'd particulary like 
to hear from anyone who routinely does french text editing.  

If it makes any difference, I use a SparcStation with standard keyboard, 
and run X11R4 and gwm.
