[comp.windows.x] where/what is 'makedev' ?

greg@eemips.tamu.edu (Greg Economides) (08/08/90)

I'm running X11R4 on a Sun 386i (SunOS 4.0.2). Trying to get xtroff
to run (also have this same problem with xditview). The problem is that
the docs for these two clients refer to a device creation program
called 'makedev.' The 386i has /dev/MAKEDEV but this doesn't seem to
be the program that is needed.

The makedev needed for xtroff needs to be able to take, as a command
line argument, the name of a description file (DESC) and produce
some files of the form '*.out'. Sun's /dev/MAKEDEV does not appear to
do this. Does anyone know where I can find the correct makedev, or
how to make mine work in the desired fashion?

Thanks for helping.

Peace,

Makedev is part of AT&T DWB (Documentors Work Bench).
It might also be available in some other freely available
ditroff package.
