[comp.windows.x] News user to Sun X-Windows -- Some basic questions

sgilley@cbnewsl.att.com (The Idealistic Cynic) (08/10/90)

I have a couple of what are probably pretty basic questions.
But our release of X-windows is so new that we don't have a user's
guide -- though we do have manual pages.

First, how does one load a raster into the background (the root)
of the screen? I know how to load bitmaps, and I know how to change
raster into postscript, but I can't find anything about changing
a raster into bitmap, or loading raster or postscript into to background.

Secondly, I would like to load specific things into my function keys.
Using the "mapi" function in $HOME/.ttyswrc I am able to load functions
into the keys in a shelltool, but do to the scrolling capabilities
of the cmdtool, I prefer to use it. Is there anyway to make the cmdtool
accept this file correctly?

Lastly, there are some tools I had under Sunview that I prefer instead
of the equivilent X-windows tools. Is there anyway to run these tool
without getting the white outline around the icons? (I don't care about
a white outline around the tool itself.)

Thanks very much.

Sean.
