[comp.windows.x] Help with X11R4

hansen@madis.af.MIL (John Hansen) (08/14/90)

Fellow X'ers:

Here are a couple of questions I have related to finishing up a succesful
installation of X11R4.

1. I have recently compiled X11R4 successfully on a Vaxstation 3200
(replacing most of DecWindows at the same time) and everything went
OK. (I even used GCC 1.37.1). In any case, I have lots of applications
that I compiled under X11R3 that I would like to run (if possible)
without having to recompile each application. When I try to run them
I get:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
X Toolkit Error: Can't Open display

for every old application I try. The R4 apps which came with the tape
mostly work OK (some dump core with a bus error but I'll figure them
out sooner or later).

I am using xdm to start things up in my rc.local file. Xservers has:
":0 local /usr/bin/X11/X :0" in it, if that is of any use. I imagine
it has something to do with xauth and .Xauthority but that is entirely
a guess on my part. Any help or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

2. The DecWindows apps die as mentioned above but in order to get
them to work eventually, I need one of two things (I think). I need
either a way to use the ".snf" fonts that came with DecWindows under
the R4 server (I believe this is probably not possible), or a copy of
the fonts.alias file sent to xpert a while back. Can some kind soul
help me out on this one?

------

All told the building experience was not too bad. I had minor
problems due to the fact that I tried to build with the fonts
sub-directory on a different file system sym-linked to
$(TOP)/mit/fonts. When the makefile tried to do relative file
specification (i.e. ../../.././lib/Xaw/ etc...) it would get lost if
it tried to access stuff that was actually on the other file system.
I got it to work by sym-linking almost the entire source tree to the
file system on which I put the fonts directory.

Thanks to all responsible for creating X11R4. It's GREAT! :-)
And thanks for lots of useful information on xpert.
You do good work. Let's all keep it up.
