[comp.windows.x] twm 1.1 locking up under the R4 server

rpaul@pima.intel.COM (Richard Paul~) (08/16/90)

First of all I am on a Microvax II workstation running Ultrix 3.1.
using X11R4 and twm 1.111 (that's whats in the RCSID of twm.c file)
Ok, now the problem.

We have X11R3 installed system wide, because some of the tool development
we have does not yet support R4, and R4 compiled on a seperate disk.

On my head (0) I have the server startup disabled in the ttys file. After I
login I then can specify if I want to run R3 or R4. When I specify to run
the R4 goodies, it then fires up the server. In the .xinitrc file is where
I have twm firing up and then the clients. Everything comes up just fine
and dandy, after some point in time and randomly either the server or twm
is getting into some infinite loop. Everything locks up execpt for the mouse
works, (which leads me to believe it not the server), when I kill the TWM
process nothing happens and the icon manager box still hangs around. I have
to end up killing the server process and logging out. I have tried using the
-v verbose option of TWM but nothing gets printed out.

I have noticed when it has locked up I was doing one of the following things.
using xlock and coming out of it by typing in my password.
somethings iconifying an emacs window.
or looking at a big graphics file with xloadimage
also using dxpsview (does anybody know of a true postscript X viewer I can get
                     bye anonymous ftp, thanks )

I have not been able to exactly pinpoint the problem, since nobody else around
here uses the R4 server yet.

If anybody has had the same problem could you please respond of what you did
to fix this, if you have fixed it.

thanx
