rws@EXPO.LCS.MIT.EDU (Bob Scheifler) (08/21/90)
The mailing list xannounce@expo.lcs.mit.edu has been created, to be used for major X announcements. Examples of major X announcements are: A new release from the X Consortium Patches from MIT for an X Consortium release Public Review of a proposed X Consortium standard Adoption of a new X Consortium standard Upcoming public X conferences, exhibitions, or meetings A new release of a major public toolkit or application Examples of things xannounce should *not* be used for are: Advertisements for commercial products Announcing patches or modifications to software Questions about anything The list will not be moderated (at least for now), but if you are unsure about whether a posting is acceptable, send it to xannounce-request@expo.lcs.mit.edu and ask that it be forwarded. Messages sent to xannounce will automatically be sent to xpert, so if you intend to continue reading xpert/comp.windows.x, there is *no* reason to subscribe to xannounce. To join the xannounce list, send a request to xannounce-request@expo.lcs.mit.edu. We will *only* accept redistribution addresses for this mailing list, not personal addresses. If you wish to receive xannounce, please contact your mail administrator to set up a local redistribution list. If someone wants to finally create a corresponding newsgroup and get the gateway set up, fine.

I would be happy to gateway x-announce into a newsgroup, but I need your help to do so. Please add the address x-announce-usenet@genbank.bio.net to the distribution, and create an address incoming-x-announce@expo.lcs.mit.edu that does not contain the x-announce-usenet address, but does contain the other addresses. [This will prevent loops.] Generally this is done as follows in /usr/lib/aliases: mailing-list: :include:/usr/local/mlists/x-announce usenet-address: x-announce-usenet@genbank.bio.net xannounce: mailing-list, usenet-address incoming-xannounce: mailing-list Let me know if you're amenable to this, -- Eliot Lear [lear@turbo.bio.net]
