Has anyone ported Calentool to X-windows? Or does a calendar management tool exist for X-windows that mails a person his daily appointments? XCal is nice, but doesn't do all I want. I would prefer an X only version, since I would rather not set up XView. I will summarize the responses. XCal is nice, but doesn't do all I want. I would prefer an X only version, since I would rather not set up XView. The closest equivalent I can think of is xcalendar. This is available from expo.lcs.mit.edu by remote ftp (and might be in the X11R4 release contrib directory). It uses Athena widgets. Unfortunately, I don't think that it will cut the mustard for Greg since it appears to be incapable of sounding alarms or mailing reminders when appointments are due. None of the Sun user's we have here thought it an adequate substitute for calentool. Sun's OpenWindows deskset (I know Greg has a Sun) does contain a calendar manager that does have the capabilities he needs, although it misses out on the astronomical information that calentool used to give. Of course, if Greg buys OpenWindows from Sun, Sun will save him the effort of setting up XView since it comes precompiled. The calendar manager, cm, is not included in the XView 2.0 distribution. I don't really understand why Greg is down on XView. It is one of the best free products I have come across and compilation on a Sun should be a piece of cake. There is a multi-user time management tool called Synchronize(tm), available from CrossWind Technologies, Inc. It displays common available times for a selected subset of users, allowing easy scheduling of meetings without conflicts. It also features recurring events, to-do items that automatically propogate if not checked off, alarms, popup notes, reminders, etc., etc., etc. We use it all the time, and couldn't survive without it! The XView Calendar Manager offers the following features: 1. Shared calendars across the network 2. Multiple views (day, week, month, year) 3. Multiple reminders (beep, flash, popup, mail) 4. High-quality hardcopy 5. Repeating events In addition, the daemon runs separate from the client and exports an RPC protocol to allow the creation of other clients (tools). -- Nannette Simpson Internet: nannette@Eng.Sun.COM Sun Microsystems, Inc.
