[comp.windows.x] Another R5 wish

koreth@panarthea.EBay.Sun.COM (Steven Grimm) (08/31/90)

This may not be a problem with R4 per se, but here's something I find very
annoying.

I use a machine with 8 megabytes of RAM. I use twm (actually vtwm, but the
same thing happened with standard twm) with several xterm windows. Naturally,
the xterms get swapped out when I don't use them for a while. When I move the
mouse pointer from an active xterm window to one of the swapped-out windows
and start typing, input goes to the window that I WAS on until the new window
comes in from disk. So, essentially, there seems to be very poor handling of
input focus movement. I notice that under Sunview, the problem doesn't
happen. The input events seem to get queued up until the new window is able
to handle them, and I get a spurt of characters in the window.

This may be a problem with twm; I haven't used other window managers enough
to experience the problem. (Yeah, I know, I should be using olwm, considering
where I work. Olwm has, um, other problems with input focusing. :)

In <235@grapevine.EBay.Sun.COM> I describe a problem with input focus taking
a while to move from one window to another. My assumption was that this was
due to the owner of the new window being swapped in.

Several people responded via E-mail, and told me to put "NoTitleFocus" in
my .twmrc. I did, and it seems to have solved the problem almost completely.

Thanks to all who responded.
