[comp.windows.x] XView and InterViews courses, O'Reilly source code, OLIT info

farmer@titan.tsd.arlut.utexas.edu (Gary Farmer) (09/05/90)

I have written to several people whose names I got from this newsgroup regarding
c++, InterViews, XView, and Motif. I have received very helpful results and would
now like to address some general questions to the newsgroup. Please email to me
or post answers to the newsgroup, as you think appropriate. The following paragraph
is a copy of my basic letter, followed by some newly generated or only partially
answered questions.

I am researching user interfaces InterViews, Open Look (XView), and Motif. When
I came onto this project, InterViews was already in use. We began using InterViews
because it was free, but more because it was object oriented and based on c++
classes. Some of our other code is already written in c++. I am curious to know
if you considered InterViews and, if so, why you did not use it. I realize the
answers may be simple, but I only started comparing user interfaces last week.
When I came onto this project, others were already using InterViews.

1. I have been studying O'Reilly, Volume 1. Does anyone know if the source code
for the examples and demos is available via ftp?

2. I have called for course information for those courses listed in the long,
    monthly article.

    a. Does anyone know of these or other courses being taught in Texas
(particularly Austin) in the next couple of months?

    b. Has anyone had particularly good experiences to report from any courses?
(I would also be interested in bad experiences, but do not open yourself
        to a slander suit.)

    c. Most course offerings are for Xlib and Xt. Has anyone heard of any courses
        for InterViews or OLIT?

    d. If we use a toolkit such as Interviews, Motif, XView, or OLIT, should we
still take a course on Xlib and Xt?

    e. If we use a toolkit such as Interviews, Motif, XView, or OLIT, should we
still take a course on widget writing?

3. Is XView primarily a tool for porting SunView applications to Xlib?

4. How does XView compare with OLIT? Is OLIT better, or does it depend upon the
    application?

5. Will source for OLIT be made available?

6. Are there any experiences you would like to share in your selection of, or
rejection of, InterViews, XView, OLIT, or Motif?
