[net.news] Persistant corruption of active file

roy@phri.UUCP (Roy Smith) (04/08/85)

I'm running news version 2.10.2 for the past few months and I've
noticed an annoying but persistant problem. Periodically my active file
gets munged, always in the same way. Note the following 2 lines:

	net.net.micro.apple 0024239 y
	net.micro.apple 00242 00175 y

The first is from a recent mungification; the second is what it
should have been (and what I manualy fixed it to be). The pattern is
always the same. It is as if when writing "net.micro.apple 00242" when
updating the active file, there was a seek forward of 4 bytes. This
usualy happens about twice a week, usualy affecting 1 or 2 news groups
each time. I am not sure, but there seems to be a preference for
munging net.lang.c, and net.micro -- I havn't really kept careful track
of what groups get zapped, but it doesn't seem random.

	Oh, yeah -- I'm running 4.2 bsd on a Vax-11/750.
