[net.news] Digest handling in rn?

dwight@timeinc.UUCP (Dwight Ernest) (03/29/85)

I'd be very interested in working on adding code to handle
digests properly to the rn sources. Readnews has digest
handling, but neither vnews nor rn has it.

Would anyone be interested in working with me on this?
Has anyone already started (or finished) on such mods?

Well, rn CAN handle digests, sort of. I'm sure there is a better way but
this is what I do:

	gSubject:
this tells rn that it should search for a line containing the string
	'Subject:'
You can repeat the search by typing
	G

The drawback with this approach is that you will miss the first 2-3 lines
of the article header.

There is a slightly better way, as it happens. Type ^G and you'll get the
above behaviour automatically. It also sets -g3 so you get two lines of
header preceding the subject, which is usually enough.

With the new version of rn coming out you could define a macro to do the
above or any variation on it you like, and bind it to any key sequence you
like. (This will also let those people who want to exchange the meaning
of space and carriage return to do so.) You want rn to look like your
favorite editor or like vnews, go right ahead.

Well, enough hype for now.

Actually, it can do better than that -- If you type ^G, it will put you
at the beginning of the next article, with the Subject: line properly
highlighted and everything. (Yes, this IS documented.)
