> Seriously though (to cflatter), what question did you have about > the rationale? About the technical reasoning or the political poppycock? Whichever mattered :-) The serious point is: what sort of reasons would users of my applications have for wanting an OSF/Motif GUI rather than an OPEN LOOK GUI (apart from the obvious, "I have a SuperWhizzo WhizzBang 1000 workstation and SuperWhizzo, Inc. only ship Motif" which kind of goes away if XView can be easily installed on a WhizzBang). From what I've seen so far OPEN LOOK wins out from the users point of view unless the user is really devoted to the Windows/Presentation manager style of things (in my field, which is scientific/technical applications this doesn't seem likely). On the other hand I also think that emacs is vastly superior to vi (and this is a much more clear-cut than OPEN LOOK vs. Motif) but I am aware that there are many people who belive the exact opposite. In the case of emacs vs vi, I understand the arguments of the vi proponents even if I don't agree with them. In the case of OPEN LOOK vs. Motif I don't even know what most of the arguments are. I'm interested in the OSF rationale (actually I'm interested in the edited highlights) since the OSF committee must have an idea of why they thought Motif was a good thing. Chris Flatters
