We are writing a book about the X sample server, which will be published by Digital Press sometime next year. One of the topics that the book covers is the process of porting the sample server to new platforms. We will also cover the history and structure of the server as well as how and when to write server extensions. We know of many of the common pitfalls of server porting, but we'd like to hear about some of the *uncommon* ones from you. What kinds of problems did *you* encounter, and how did you solve them? We're especially interested in hearing about ports to unusual architectures or operating systems. (-:Got an X server on a DEC-10? We'd like to hear about it!) If we use your story in the book, we'll attribute it to you (unless you ask us not to). The authors of the best four stories (in our opinion) will be rewarded with a free copy of the book when it is released. We also welcome any comments that you might have about a server book. What have you wanted to know about the server but couldn't find out? What do you wish you knew about the server? What information about the server would make your job easier, your life fuller, and your kids above average? Please mail any stories, comments or suggestions to xserver@gogoman.sf.ca.us (decwrl.dec.com!gogoman!xserver) or xserver@village.boston.ma.us (ima.isc.com!village!xserver). Thank you, Erik Fortune Elias Israel
