I move on a daily basis between low-res and high-res screens. I can't find a font for use on the high-res screen that is equivalent to what I'm using on the low res screen, i.e. that is equally easy on my eyes, runs my xview applications similarly to on a low-res screen, and works well in the tools. I've been using xlsfonts to determine font names, and specifying them in my .Xdefaults as "Font.Name:". I've tried on the order of 30 fonts. I've tried both those that are supposed to be scalable as well as fixed-size fonts. I've had several problems. Many of the fonts leave junk on my screen when I delete, and in vi the character I'm positioned over is actually several characters away from the character I'm editing. The scalable fonts remain VERY tiny on a high-res screen. Fixed fonts let me see things comparably to the size on a low-res screen, but they screw up mail tool and all sorts of things because where the font sizes were already larger, they appear to get blown up proportionally. My text fields end up on top of buttons, and all sorts of other inconveniences.. Morever, some places, the fonts doesn't get modified, e.g. mailtool displays messages to me as tiny as ever. How do I get around this? Question is: How can I get a font comparable to what I'm using on low-res screens (the default - lucida-sans ) that functions similarly in tools and applications? -- Winifred I.
