[comp.windows.x] Has anyone gotten xdm to work with Sun's X server?

remy@geriatrix.cs.uoregon.edu (Remy Evard) (09/28/90)

I've been installing X11R4 and OpenWindows on several sparcs. Using
vanilla X, I've had xdm running on all of them without any problem
(except some mild user complaints...) I've also had OpenWindows
running just fine, except that you have to start it from the
Sun terminal mode instead of having an xdm-like interface for it.
So, both X and OpenWindows are installed just fine.

When I specify the OpenWindows server (/usr/openwin/bin/xnews) as
the server for xdm to use, xdm chokes and dies. The errors say
that libXextent.so couldn't be found, which is a shared lib kept in
/usr/openwin/lib. I should be able to fix this in a number of ways,
but it brings up several questions:

1) xnews needs to read $OPENWINHOME (for all kinds of things) from the
environment. How do I send it this from xdm?
2) Can xnews work with xdm at all?
3) If not, is there some xdm-like interface for it?

Finally, and this is probably a wish list item, is would be great if
I could have some kind of pop-up menu that asks you to select either
vanilla X, or OpenWindows, or whatever, and then ran the appropriate
server. Some of our users here need NeWS or need old SunView stuff,
but most of them prefer good old X. Being able to choose a server, or
environment, would be extremely convenient.

Thanks for any help,
