[comp.windows.x] X Window System vs Medical

dra@neuro.usc.edu (Diane Annala) (09/28/90)

First, could someone send me email with information about high resolution
(e.g. 2Kx2K plus) frame buffers/monitors compatible with X Window System?

Second, are there any plans to provide a new visual class with a depth of
12 or more bits under the standard distribution of the X Widow System? I
am concerned that we may otherwise exclude medical imaging applications--
which often require 12 bit greyscale images to capture subtle shadows--if
we don't extend the potential depth of the greyscale visual.

(The X Widow System? Is that an extension to X that provides for
detecting the user's sex and killing men who happen to use it? :-)

A new visual class isn't necessary. There is nothing incompatible with
the notion of any of the six visual classes on a 12-bit-deep screen.
The MIT sample server does not support 12-bit-deep screens, but
(if the hardware is cooperative) it wouldn't be too much work.

Diane,

I tried to email you this information, but it got bounced back.

Tech-Source makes a board called the GDS-3950 which drives several high
resolution color and monochrome displays, such as:

	Sony 2048 x 2048 color display
	Tektronix GMA 201 2048 x 1600 monochrome display

The GDS-3950 is a single size 9U card, with complete software to run
and accelerated version of X11R4 in many of the Sun machines which support
the VMEbus (Sun-3/1xx, Sun-3/2xx, Sun-4/110, Sun-4/2xx, Sun-4/3xx, etc.).

The board supports up to 20 image planes fully configured 8-bits double
buffered plus 4-bits overlay.
