[comp.windows.x] prob w/scroll bars and xterm

I am new to X, so please forgive my ignorance. I am trying to set up my
environment in X on a vaxstation 3200 running bsd (mach). I am running twm.
When I specify, either on the command line or in .X11defaults, that I wish
scroll bars on my windows. the instantiation fails. More accurately, the
window is instantiated and the immediately disappears again. Needless to say,
this is a bit frustrating. The other interesting this is that this only seems
to happen with Bourne shell and not with C- shell. However, it is my preference
until I can get hold of KornShell to use Borne rather than Csh (please, no
arguments on this. I have my reasons). Can somebody tell me what the problem is
here? In the documentation, it suggests it can handle both shells (which is
can so long as you don't use scroll bars).
