[comp.windows.x] font server

I agree that the font server may solve an important problem, but
I am also worried that the font server will introduce about as many
new problems as it will solve.

Font management today is a nightmare, it can hardly get worse.

To an application writer, introducing a font of application-specific
symbols, the font-server will not make the life any easier.

I disagree, but I don't have time to argue with you.

Without such an extension, I personally consider any "font server"
   semi-useless.

You are welcome to your opinion. Terminal vendors, people with heterogenous
environments, and people who want to incorporate scalable fonts, that voice
their opinion in the Consortium appear to disagree with you.

Why not come with the "XDownloadFont" extension FIRST.

Because the Consortium members see the priorities differently.

   Most likely,
it will be more widely used than your font server, and it will be
a common prerequisite for your font server as well.

It is not at all a prerequistie for a font server.
