[net.news] Whither net.flame, Chuq?

moriarty@fluke.UUCP (Jeff Meyer) (06/25/85)

Well, I can't say I'd miss net.flame much, as I can always post STUPID
PEOPLE'S COURT to net.misc, and Ken Ardnt was the only regular poster worth
reading anyway. Still, I can see problems... does this mean that the
flamers (especially the rabid ones, who have no respect for net boundaries
anyway) will begin moving their flames to other newsgroups? In other words,
the use of net.flame as a "release valve" for the net would be terminated;
what would be the effects?

I remember that when I first heard of moderated news a year and a half ago,
I was rather shocked, and against it (in the name of net anarchy). Well,
having seen how net anarchy leaves the front door open to the incurably
stupid, I really wish we could have gotten moderated newsgroups off the
ground. Still, a network is only as "professional" as its posters, and you
have to realize that there will always be impolite or "non-professional"
people on the net -- it's inevitable, even on a moderated system.
And again, there is always the problem that opinions of worthy/non-worthy
net value by you, me, or The Other Fella may be wrong. It's discouraging,
but I've come to believe that about all one can do is keep an eye out
towards the quality of one's own postings, and preach tolerance. Not as
satisfying, but...

I think it would be unwise to make any sudden changes from nsc, Chuq; that
would be the action which really *does* fragment the net, for everyone.
Perhaps it would be reasonable to find out what other site administrator's
think, since they represent the people/organizations/companies who pay for
the whole shebang, anyway.

Whatever else happens, we're going to see a lot of emotion in response to
your article, not all of it polite. Prepare thyself...

"Well, we've come full circle, Lord; I'd like to think there's
some higher meaning to all this. It would certainly reflect
         well on you."

        Expect the Unexpected.
He does. ---> Moriarty, aka Jeff Meyer
