[net.news] minor retractions Re: ucla and net.flame

chuqui@nsc.UUCP (Chuq Von Rospach) (06/27/85)

Since I've gone to great lengths to scream my frustration at the recent
boneheadedness of the ucla people, I thought it was only fair to admit to
some overreaction on my part and make some minor apologies where I stepped
out of bounds.

I've been in conversation with Alex at ucla-cs for a day or so.
While discussing the situation with him, it became obvious that a lot of
the flamage I was aiming at him was misdirected. His act with the
followup-to header was still a bonehead act, but it turns out that most of
my adrenalin was really aimed at Scott for his rather invective comments in
net.flame and net.women going on at the same time. Because there were two
people doing things at the same time, I just lumped them into one virtual
person at ucla, and I shouldn't have. If it hadn't been for the assinine
comments Scott would have made, I probably wouldn't have payed a lot of
attention to Alex's stunt at all. I think, for the record, that Alex now
realizes he screwed up, and that he wishes he never got into it in the
first place. So, I have an apology for Alex for catching him in the
cross-fire, he really didn't deserve all of the garbage he got from me.

Also, I got a nice note from Peter Reiher, who does a lot of reviews in
net.movies, wondering if I was lumping him in with the rest of the idiots.
For the record, I am not. Peter has always come across as a very intelligent
and positive person, and is definitely to be considered an asset to the
net. I apologize to him for grandstanding and making some broad assertions
that really aren't true. There IS good stuff that comes out of ucla-cs, and
Peter is responsible for a good percentage of it.

I should also point out, though, what one or two idiots on a site can do to
the reputation of everyone on it. I'm sorry I accidently lumped the good
people in with the bad, but at the same time the good people on a site
should never feel they have to remind people of their existence. People who
don't believe that they are acting as representatives of their site
should keep this incident in mind, though.
