[comp.windows.x] kterm

peterw@blia.BLI.COM (Peter Wisnovsky) (08/28/90)

Hi...

We are about to be getting a network of Sparcstations with all of the
OpenWindows stuff, and were wondering about kanji (Japanese character)
support. My impression from the documents is that:

- there is a program in x11r3/contrib called `kterm' that does kanji;

- that kanji is not supported in the initial release of OpenWindows,
but work is being done on it.

My questions are:

- what software configurations runnable on Sparcstations support
  kterm?

- when will kterm be working under OpenWindows?

- what other 16-bit fonts does kterm support, if any? (Chinese,
  Korean, etc.)

- what character coding protocols does kterm support? (e.g. EUC, ISO,
  JIS, etc.)

- is there anyone out there who is familiar with both kterm and Sun's
own product for kanji support (JLE) who can talk about the relative
  merits of each product?

Thanks for your help,

Peter Wisnovsky

Has anyone ventured into implementing kterm, a contributed client in R4.
I am having problems getting the client built. Would like to hear your
experience.

The version distributed with X11R4 is an old version. Version 4.1.0
is available on expo.lcs.mit.edu [18.30.0.212] in the contrib/
directory.
